Why Britain First
Britain combined the preconditions: agricultural surplus, abundant coal and iron, colonial markets and raw materials, capital and banking, navigable rivers and coastline, political stability, patent protection, and a mobile labor force freed by enclosure.
Agricultural Revolution
Innovations preceding industry: crop rotation with turnips and clover (eliminating fallow), selective livestock breeding (Bakewell), seed drill (Tull), and enclosure β producing more food with fewer workers and freeing labor for factories.
Enclosure Movement
The consolidation of open fields and common lands into privately fenced farms, authorized by Parliamentary acts. It raised productivity but dispossessed smallholders and cottagers β pushing rural labor toward wage work and cities.
Cottage Industry / Putting-Out System
Pre-factory manufacturing: merchants supplied raw materials (especially wool and cotton) to rural families who spun and wove at home for piece wages. Flexible but slow β and doomed by machine competition.
Spinning Jenny (Hargreaves, c. 1765)
A hand-powered machine allowing one spinner to work many spindles at once β the first breakthrough in mechanizing textile production.
Water Frame (Arkwright, 1769)
A water-powered spinning machine too large for homes β requiring mills built beside streams. Arkwright's factories, with disciplined shifts of workers tending machines, created the factory system itself.
Spinning Mule & Power Loom
Crompton's mule (1779) combined jenny and water frame to spin fine, strong thread in quantity; Cartwright's power loom (1785) eventually mechanized weaving β completing the mechanization of cotton textiles.
James Watt's Steam Engine (1769β1782)
Watt's improvements (separate condenser, rotary motion) turned Newcomen's inefficient mine pump into a practical power source for factories, mills, and eventually locomotives and ships β freeing industry from riverside locations.
Coal and Iron
The Industrial Revolution's material base: coal replaced wood as fuel (coke smelting, Darby), and iron production soared (Cort's puddling process) β supplying machines, rails, bridges, and buildings.
Railroads β Stephenson's Rocket (1829)

Factory System
Production concentrated in large buildings around powered machinery, with workers subjected to the clock, the bell, shift discipline, and fines β replacing the task-oriented rhythms of farm and cottage with industrial time-discipline.
Child and Female Labor
Factories and mines employed children (small, cheap, nimble) and women (paid a fraction of men's wages) extensively. Parliamentary investigations (Sadler Committee, Mines Report 1842) exposed conditions that shocked opinion and produced regulation.
Factory Acts

Luddites (1811β1816)
