Human Geography
The study of the spatial patterns of human activity โ€” where people and their cultures, economies, and politics are located, and why.
Spatial Perspective
Analyzing the world by asking where things are and why they are there โ€” the core way geographers think.
Map
A two-dimensional representation of Earth's surface used to display and analyze spatial data. Every map involves choices and distortion.
Reference Map
A map that shows locations and features (boundaries, cities, roads) โ€” e.g., a road map or political map. Used to find places.
Thematic Map
A map that displays a particular pattern or variable (population, income, climate) across space to reveal spatial patterns.
Choropleth Map
A thematic map that uses color or shading in defined areas (like states) to show the value of a variable โ€” e.g., population density by county.
Dot Distribution Map
Uses dots to show the presence and density of a feature; clustering of dots reveals concentration (as in John Snow's cholera map).
Graduated (Proportional) Symbol Map
Uses symbols sized in proportion to the value they represent โ€” bigger symbol, larger quantity (e.g., city populations).
Isoline (Isarithmic) Map

Distortion
The unavoidable error introduced when flattening a globe: no map can preserve shape, area, distance, and direction all at once.
Mercator Projection
Preserves direction and shape (useful for navigation) but severely distorts area, making high-latitude regions look far too large (Greenland vs. Africa).
Gall-Peters Projection
An equal-area projection that shows true relative size of landmasses but distorts their shapes โ€” often used to counter Mercator's Eurocentric bias.
Robinson Projection
A compromise projection that minimizes overall distortion by spreading it across all properties, so nothing is perfectly accurate but nothing is extreme.
Conic Projection
Projects the globe onto a cone; accurate for mid-latitude regions, useful for mapping countries like the U.S.
Absolute Location
The exact position of a place, given by coordinates (latitude and longitude) or a precise address. It never changes.
Relative Location
The position of a place in relation to other places (e.g., 'north of the city,' 'near the coast'). It can change as connections change.
Latitude and Longitude
The grid of imaginary lines used for absolute location: latitude measures north-south (from the equator), longitude east-west (from the prime meridian).
Site
The physical characteristics of a place โ€” its landforms, climate, soil, water, vegetation (the internal features of a location).
Situation
The location of a place relative to its surroundings and connections to other places (its accessibility and context).
Place
A location with meaning โ€” its unique human and physical characteristics and the sense of identity people attach to it.
Toponym
The name given to a place. Toponyms can reveal history, culture, and who held power (e.g., colonial or indigenous names).
Space
The geometric surface of the Earth and the way phenomena are arranged across it โ€” the arrangement geographers analyze.
Flows
The movement of people, goods, ideas, and information across space, linking places together (migration, trade, communication).
Spatial Pattern
The arrangement of a phenomenon across Earth's surface โ€” whether features are clustered, dispersed, or arranged in some order.
Clustered (Agglomerated) Pattern
Features grouped closely together in space (like houses in a village) โ€” a concentrated distribution.
Dispersed (Scattered) Pattern
Features spread far apart across an area (like isolated farms on the Great Plains) โ€” a spread-out distribution.
Density
How frequently something occurs in a given area โ€” the number of features per unit of space.
Arithmetic Density
Total population divided by total land area โ€” the simplest measure of how crowded a place is on average.
Physiological Density
Population divided by the amount of arable (farmable) land. A high value signals pressure on food-producing land.
Agricultural Density
The number of farmers per unit of arable land. A low value (few farmers per area) suggests mechanized, efficient agriculture.
Concentration
The extent to which features are spread out or bunched together in an area (clustered vs. dispersed) โ€” distinct from density.
Distribution
The arrangement of a feature across space, described by its density, concentration, and pattern.
Distance Decay
The weakening of a phenomenon or interaction as distance from its origin increases โ€” the farther apart, the less interaction.
Friction of Distance
The idea that distance requires effort, time, and cost, which discourages interaction โ€” the cause of distance decay.
Time-Space Compression
The shrinking 'feel' of distance as transportation and communication technology make places seem closer and interaction faster.
Tobler's First Law of Geography
'Everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things' โ€” the principle behind spatial correlation.
Map Scale
The ratio between distance on a map and actual distance on Earth (e.g., 1:100,000). It shows how much reality has been reduced.
Large-Scale Map

Region
An area of Earth defined by one or more unifying characteristics. Regions are human constructs used to organize and simplify space.
Formal (Uniform) Region
An area with one or more shared traits throughout โ€” a measurable, uniform characteristic (e.g., a country, a climate zone, a language area).
Functional (Nodal) Region
An area organized around a central node or focal point, connected by movement or function (e.g., a pizza delivery area, a metro transit zone, a newspaper circulation area).
Perceptual (Vernacular) Region
A region defined by people's beliefs, feelings, and attitudes โ€” its boundaries are fuzzy and vary by person (e.g., 'the South,' 'the Midwest,' 'Dixie').
Regionalization
